Abstract
Background: Professional titles are used to signify a person's professional role or to designate membership in a professional society. They are usually used as a prefix before a person’s name while academic qualifications are used as a suffix following the person's name.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude, use, and factors influencing the use of professional titles and abbreviations among Nurses in Nigeria.
Method: An online, cross-sectional, and self-administered questionnaire was used to carry out the study. A total of 395 participants completed the survey.
Results: Majority of Nurses have knowledge of the professional title "Nurse" and it's an abbreviation, the majority have a positive attitude towards the use of the title, the majority use the title and abbreviation and mostly prefer 'Nr.', the factors that influence the few that doesn't use it was lack of awareness and the knowledge of the title and abbreviation.
Conclusion: the use of a professional title and a unique abbreviation of the title will promote a positive image of Nursing and promote professionalism.
