Graduate midwives in the country have called on the Federal Government to scrap the mandatory national service, which has prevented them from professional practice in the last few years.
Making the appeal in Benin, Edo State, representative of the midwives, Jennifer Obodoh, said that thousands of graduate midwives have not been called for the mandatory service by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, owing to shortage of funds to pay their allowances. She alleged that NMCN claimed that the Federal Government had failed to remit money for the purpose. “On account of this, midwives who completed their training in the last few years have been unable to practice or advance professionally,” she said.
According to Obodoh, “NMCN is a body that regulates nursing and midwifery practice in Nigeria. The body issues license and notification to graduate nurses and midwives to practise, but this is done after a mandatory one year national service. “For some time now, graduates from midwifery schools all over the federation have not been able to practice or advance professionally because they have not been registered by the NMCN. “The council claimed that the little money they get from government is used to service backlog of debts.”
Obodoh regretted that there are trained midwives who have been redundant since graduation for years now, and are unable to seek employment or advance professionally.
